Fiber

Singlemode fiber (SMF)

G.651 Multimode Fiber with a 50-Micron Core
G.652 Standard Single Mode Fiber (SMF), Nondispersion-Shifted Fiber (NDSF)
G.652.C Low Water Peak Nondispersion-Shifted Fiber
G.653 Dispersion-Shifter Fiber (DSF)
G.654 1550-nm Loss-Minimized Fiber
G.655 Non-Zero Dispersion Shifted Fiber (NZDSF)
G.656/G.655.E Non-Zero Dispersion Shifted Fiber NZDSF
G.657 SMF with improved bending performance compared to G.652
G.657.A is fully compliant with G.652, G.657.B is not necessarily
compliant with G.652 but is capable of low values of macrobending
losses at very low bend radii and is pre-dominantly intended for
in-building use.

Fiber Connectors

PC, UPC, APC are short for:
- Physical Contact (PC)
- Ultra Physical Contact (UPC)
- Angled Physical Contact (APC)
They are actually the polish style of fiber optic ferrules.

Orientation duplex connector:

  • when looking into front of sfp, with notch upwards:
    • left = transmit
    • right = receive
  • NOTE: it is marked on the SFP with small arrows!

APC tip

  • Fiber Connectors are available in two version (polishing of the tip):
    • PC = Polished Contact (standard, color=blue)
    • APC = Angle-Polished Contact (available in 8 and 9 degrees, 8 is more common, color=green)
  • APC is only available for Singlemode fiber (SMF). for Multimode-Fiber (MMF) the tip is always PC (color=beige).
  • APC is used in long-distance SMF networks to reduce reflections

Attenuators

microconnect_attenuator_lc-pc_sm.jpg

When shorter distances of single-mode fiber are used, it may be
necessary to insert an inline optical attenuator in the link to
avoid overloading the receiver. A 10-dB inline optical attenuator
should be inserted between the fiber-optic cable plant and the
receiving port on the SFP at each end of the link whenever the
fiber-optic cable span loss is less than 8 dB.
